Taking care of your teeth

Taking care of your teeth is just as important as taking care of the rest of your body. Some health problems can be linked to the condition of a person’s teeth.

The American Dental Association (ADA) is an organization that focuses on preventing and treating diseases of the gums and teeth.

To prevent cavities and keep your gums and teeth healthy, the ADA recommends that you:

Eat a healthy diet

Don’t eat a lot of sugary snacks or drink a lot of sugary drinks (like sodas, sweet tea, sports drinks, or lemonade). Also avoid tobacco and coffee products.

Regular dental visits

See a dentist at least once a year to have your teeth cleaned and your mouth checked for problems.

These dental visits will help:

  • prevent tooth decay

  • prevent gum disease

  • prevent bad breath

  • improve overall health
