Complications of sickle cell disease happen when the red blood cells change from being round and smooth to being stiff and shaped like a sickle. Certain situations make this more likely to happen. It is important to know about the triggers and to avoid them as much as possible.


 
dehydration.png

Dehydration (not enough fluid)

Drink plenty of fluids. Water and drinks without caffeine are the best choices. If you are getting thirsty throughout the day, you are not drinking enough.

Extreme hot or cold temperatures

Stay indoors if it is really hot or really cold outside. Avoid sudden changes in temperature like jumping into a cold swimming pool.

Feeling tired

Get plenty of sleep and rest when you are tired.

Recognize when you are stressed and take action to handle it.

Do what you can to try and keep from getting sick:

  • Wash your hands often

  • Avoid spending time with people who are sick

  • Visit your provider for regular checkups.

  • If you do get sick, make sure to continue to drink plenty of fluids to keep from getting dehydrated.

There are ways to manage cramps during your period. Birth control can lessen sickle cell pain during periods.

Scuba diving

  • Airplanes that are not pressurized

Also avoid situations that cause you to overuse your body like military boot camps or heavy sports training.
