ACE INHIBITOR

A category of drug that is used to relax blood vessels and lower blood pressure. The names of these medicines usually end in “pril.”


ACUTE CHEST SYNDROME

A complication of sickle cell disease that involves the lung. It resembles pneumonia with fever, cough, and chest pain.


ANEMIA

A condition where a person has fewer red blood cells than normal.


ANTIBIOTIC

Medicine used to treat or prevent infections caused by bacteria.


APHERESIS

When a machine is used to remove your red blood cells and replace them with donated blood.


ARB (ANGIOTENSIN RECEPTOR BLOCKER)

A category of drug that is used to relax blood vessels and lower blood pressure. The names of these medicines usually end in “artan.”


ASTHMA ACTION PLAN

A written plan that describes steps to take to manage your asthma.


AVASCULAR NECROSIS

Death of bone tissue caused by a decrease in blood supply.


BLOOD PROTEINS (ANTIGEN)

A substance that causes your body’s immune system to become active.


BLOOD TRANSFUSION

A common procedure where you are given blood that has been donated by another person.


BNP (B-TYPE NATRIURETIC PEPTIDE)

A hormone made by your heart that rises when the heart has to work hard to pump blood to the rest of the body.


COUNSELING

The process of meeting with a person (counselor) trained to help deal with mental health issues, managing stress, and coping with life situations.


CT SCAN (COMPUTERIZED TOMOGRAPHY)

A test that uses an X-ray and a computer to get many pictures of a part of your body from different angles.


DEHYDRATION

A loss of fluid from the body.


DEPRESSION

A common health problem that affects how you feel and how you are able to cope with life.
